I’ve covered local high school volleyball for the Press Democrat for 13 years. My daughter played volleyball at San Ramon. I covered El Molino in its heyday when Ed “Bear” Grassl took the Lions to the state tournament. I watched Maria Carrillo win section tournaments and CIF/Norcal tournament matches. I’ve covered Analy and Nancy Williams’ outstanding squads.

Cloverdale was beaten Friday by a new entry into the North Coast Section Division IV football playoffs — Valley Christian from Dublin.
The Vikings play in the Bay Football League. It was their first section game, and this is their first season of varsity football. Yet, they looked as if they had been around a long time – the best equipment and some high-profile coaches, including ex-NFL players John Parrella (head coach) and Hall-of-fame cornerback Rod Woodson.

St. Vincent hammered visiting Calistoga on Saturday in the opening round of the Division V North Coast Section football playoffs – it wasn’t unexpected. St. Vincent is the defending champs and will probably win out again.

There had been some speculation that Petaluma’s quarterfinal game against Cardinal Newman would be moved to Rancho Cotate, which has a synthetic turf field. But the contest will remain at Petaluma’s Durst Field.

It was just the type of high-degree-of-difficulty attempt that had resulted in many Zanutto’s 21 interceptions this season.
