Montgomery will get a shot at the North Coast Section Div. II softball crown Saturday against Pinole Valley. The Vikings are a talented group of players. They have an outstanding pitcher in Taylor Stroud, who seems to be getting better as the season comes to an end. They have played creditable defense all year, anchored by Deven Kestler in centerfield and shortstop Maely Sedlik. And, …

OK, for starters, full disclosure: I’ve seen Scott Harkin play exactly twice.
But, to me, Casa Grande’s senior shortstop/pitcher is a very impressive player.
He’s 6-foot-3, 185 pounds and throws a fastball that hovers around 90 mph. This season, he hit .386 and had an 0.68 ERA. In 41 innings, he allowed 23 hits, issued four walks and had 54 strikeouts.

You never know what’s going to happen in a baseball game, but I knew one thing for sure before the Analy baseball team played Miramonte in the North Coast Section Division III semifinals on Tuesday in Orinda: No one was going to hit a home run over the center-field fence.
The baseball diamond at Miramonte has fences down the right- and left-field lines, but those fences …

One of the nice moments of the baseball season occurred Friday afternoon in the Cardinal Newman-Redwood Division II North Coast Section playoffs. Newman pitcher, senior Sean Sweeney, took the mound in relief of starter Jason Alexander to get the final out and preserve the Cardinals 4-3 win.Sweeney hadn’t seen any live action since May 11th when he went down in a violent collision at …

The 15th annual Press Democrat All-Empire Awards Banquet concluded less than an hour ago. Master of Ceremonies Eric Branch handled his job with style and humor; our very own columnist Bob Padecky was the guest speaker, and three coaches were honored – Rick O’Brien, Casa Grande football; Lin Barrett, Mendocino/Fort Bragg and Doug Courtemarche of Santa Rosa.
But, as it should be, the young …

Which school’s sports team got jobbed by either not making the North Coast Section playoffs, or getting what may seem an undeserving seed?
In competition would be the Windsor softball team, which didn’t make the Div. II field, despite a 15-6 record. What sealed the fate of the Jaguars, was Casa Grande, the SCL champ and a two-time winner against Windsor, getting the 12th …
