A good example: Rancho Cotate senior Kylie Goltze

by admin

Posted by: Press Democrat correspondent Dewey Forget Kylie Goltze may lead the league in dirty uniforms. The speedy Rancho Cotate senior plays softball with gusto, sliding into a bag or diving to make a spectacular stop on a grounder with regularity. Goltze is the recognized leader for the Cougars, one of the top teams in the Redwood Empire. Cougars’ coach Dave Johnson says she can be vocal, but usually leads by example. … Read More »

Pitching down this year? Not for Montgomery and Rancho

by admin

Posted by: Press Democrat correspondent Dewey Forget Talking with North Bay League and Sonoma County League softball coaches, a common refrain is revealed – depth and quality of pitching is down this season. Hitting around the league is up. Undefeated Montgomery is hitting .337 as a team. With that in mind, consider the recent match-up between Rancho Cotate and Montgomery. The Vikings won 1-0 to run their record to 19-0. … Read More »

Rancho coach Ogston: Local teams just as good as Bay Area teams

by admin

Posted by: Press Democrat correspondent Dewey Forget A recent conversation with Rancho Cotate baseball coach Jeff Ogston got around to the quality of baseball in the Redwood Empire. Ogston, who coaches the under-18 Sonoma County Rebels, says the idea that local teams don’t have the talent or measure up with East Bay teams, or Bay area teams in general, is pure hog-wash. Ogston points out that each year the Rebels travel to … Read More »

Rancho coach Ogston: Facing Montgomery pitcher Lavarta was ‘frustrating’

by admin

Posted by: PD correspondent Dewey Forget Familiarity may not breed contempt in local high school baseball circles, but it can certainly be frustrating. Case in point: Rancho Cotate and Montgomery. Vikings’ lefty Kevin Lavarta tossed a two-hitter at Rancho on Friday, a performance Cougars’ coach Jeff Ogston called frustrating. It seems Ogston and the Cougars know Lavarta well. Ogston coaches the Sonoma County Rebels, an 18-under travel team in the summer. … Read More »

High school golf today at a higher level

by admin

This probably rates as a stupid question, but why are there so many good young golfers now? I’m sure it has to do with taking up the sport at a young age (I don’t think I played my first round of golf until I was out of high school) and having better athletes playing. I know the equipment technology in golf is fantastic, but you still have to swing the driver or … Read More »

Lesson from Petaluma: Walks are win killers, most of the time

by admin

Posted by: PD correspondent Dewey Forget St. Vincent defeated Clear Lake 9-8 Tuesday. Not completely unexpected. After all, the Mustangs are the defending North Central League I – South softball champs and this was their league opener against the Cardinals. It was, however, an unusual game in several respects. First, St. Vincent’s starter Kelsey Joyce walked seven batters, hit three and threw three wild pitches, leading to six runs. The Mustangs also … Read More »

Carrillo’s Tagnolli: ‘I take full responsibility’

by admin

Posted by: Staff Writer Eric Branch After his slumping team lost to Piner, 9-1, Tuesday, Maria Carrillo baseball coach Steve Tagnolli had no trouble finding someone to blame. The Pumas dropped to 7-12 after their 11th loss in their past 13 games. As a result, Tagnolli took dead aim … at himself. “We haven’t played well, I think we’ve established we’re not a very good baseball team,” Tagnolli said. “And I told the … Read More »
