It’s shaping up as a big week for Empire basketball teams. In Division III both Piner and Analy boys are in semifinal games.

The SCL wrestling championships were held at Sonoma Valley on Saturday and it may not be one of the big attention grabbers in high school sports, but there are some pretty good athletes and hard-nose scrappers out there. It’s not a sport for the timid and conditioning is key.

Joe Ferguson, Cardinal Newman’s talented running back/linebacker, has committed to Division II Truman State University in Missouri. Before a name change, the only public university in Missouri was known as Northeast Missouri State.

My first look at Cardinal Newman I walked away very impressed. It’s not the biggest team around, but it plays together so well. Ukiah might have had a size advantage and with Jesse Williams playing unbelieveabll well, Ukiah took a one-point lead with 7 minutes to go in the third quarter.

For those who didn’t see the score in the paper, Piner boys defeated Maria Carrillo, 58-42, on Wednesday night. Lucas Devenny scored 20 points for Piner.

Petaluma senior Nick Marsh accepted a five-year football scholarship as a place kicker/punter to the University of Utah this week. He was flown to the Salt Lake City school, along with his mom and dad, Friday and returned to Petaluma Sunday night.

Cal Poly Pomona Athletic Director Brian Swanson said Wednesday that Maria Carrillo’s Justin Herold still has a scholarship to play basketball at the CCAA Division II school next year.
“We’re looking forward to Justin joining the program,” Swanson said.
Herold was removed from the Maria Carrillo basketball team before last Saturday’s game for an administrative reason, according to coach Jerry Deakins. He won’t play for the rest of the season.

Petaluma High kicker/punter Nick Marsh has accepted a full scholarship to the University of Utah, accoring to Trojans head coach Steve Ellison.
Marsh won a national punting competition last month at Las Vegas and was nationally ranked by Chris Sailer, a former UCLA kicker, who runs a kicking school in Southern California and has seen many of his students go on to land scholarships at Division I colleges.

Maria Carrillo senior Justin Herold, among the leading scorers in the Redwood Empire, and who accepted an athletic scholarship to Cal Poly Pomona, has been removed from the team for an administrative reason, according to head coach Jerry Deakins.
Herold did not play in Friday’s loss to Cardinal Newman. The 6-foot-7 Herold scored 38 points last week in a win against Santa Rosa and 30 in a win against Montgomery.
