High scoring individual performances

by admin

In light of Newman’s Tony Baldocchi’s 41-point school record performance against Ukiah, what are some of the top scoring performances you can remember? I go back a ways, plus I had access to old PD record books, so I can come up with Geyserville’s Rudy Narvarro, scoring 62 points in a game in the 1966-67 season and just a few years ago Greg Narvaez scored 61 in a game for Deep … Read More »

Can Newman go unbeaten in league?

by admin

Obviously, the Cardinal Newman basketball team isn’t going to predict an undefeated season, but that’s what blogs are for, to speculate. Newman wraps up North Bay League first half play Saturday night at Ukiah and that’s not a gimme game. Ukiah is much improved and is 4-2 in the NBL and 13-5 overall. It’s never easy playing at Ukiah. The game was originally scheduled to be played at Newman, but at … Read More »

Looks like a good fit for Ukiah QB Kyle Morris

by admin

Congrats to Kyle Morris of Ukiah on receiving a football scholarship to Idaho State University. I loved watching Morris play. He’s an excellent QB and passer. He has good presence in the pocket and a good throwing motion. He could also scramble when the need be. Two of the best games of the year involved Ukiah and Morris, a couple of last minute losses, one to Rancho Cotate, 35-32, and a … Read More »

Time to rate the prep basketball teams

by admin

The high school basketball season is nearly half over. Cardinal Newman is still undefeated, Piner and the Maria Carrillo boys have looked good and so has Analy and Ukiah. In girls’ large schools, Petaluma and Ursuline are league leaders and Montgomery, Sonoma and Healdsburg have been playing good ball. And in small-schools, the Cloverdale boys won a close one against St. Vincent Friday and the Rincon Valley Christian girls look strong … Read More »

Rec softball is not done in Santa Rosa

by admin

The doom and gloom following last year’s city recreation softball leagues over whether such activities would be held again because of a shortfall in the Santa Rosa City budget may have been a little premature. I received in the recent mail a softball brochure for the 2009 Santa Rosa City softball season with a couple of modifications. In the men’s slowpitch leagues, games will have just one umpire, instead of two, … Read More »

What makes a good high school coach?

by admin

From years of covering sports, I tend to side with coaches when it comes to job performance, particularly at the high school level. What makes a great high school coach? Wins are always nice and kids certainly get a kick out of success and all the flattering praise they receive for winning. But think back to the youth teams you competed on. I had drill sargeant types, nice guy types, coaches … Read More »

Ranking Empire boys’ basketball

by admin

Refreshed from a three-week vacation it’s time to tackle the most pressing of high school boys’ basketball issues, which are the best teams in the Empire? With calpreps.com section and league rankings as my cheat sheet, here’s what I’ve come up with as far as large school and small school rankings: Large School — 1. Cardinal Newman (13-0, 2-0), 2. Piner (11-3, 2-0), 3. Analy (10-6, 2-0), T4. Maria Carrillo (8-5, 1-1), … Read More »
