Speed kills. St. Bonaventure had way too much speed on Saturday and it was enough to offset three first half turnovers. Oaks Christian let Newman stay in the game, by not running the ball enough. St. Bonaventure led Newman stay in the game for a half with turnovers, but they dominated in the second half.
Patrick Hall had one long TD run, but he clearly wasn’t the difference. It was the …

Empire high school coaches and who they like in the Newman-St. Bonaventure game. A few of the coaches felt uncomfortable making predictions because they haven’t seen St. Bonaventure. That’s from the coach’s handbook which states, “Let me see some film, before I make judgment.”
Steve Ellison, Petaluma: St. Bonaventure is a great football team with some great athletes drawn from a broad area. From Day 1, Paul Cronin, even when he …

The state bowl lineup looks pretty good, even though a lot of people wanted to see De La Salle play Long Beach Poly in the open division game.
Poly is expected to beat Grant of Sacramento, although Poly is known for its defense and doesn’t score all that much against the better teams in the South. Does Grant have a shot?
How about the rematch from last year of De La Salle …

As expected Cardinal Newman seems to be a generous underdog against St. Bonaventure in Saturday’s game. St. Bonny’s has been said to be as high as a 14-point favorite by various blogsters.
St. Bonny’s is supposed to have superior speed and size to Cardinal Newman, particularly at the skill positions.
It sounds a little like Oaks Christian all over again.
Former Newman coach Ed Lloyd, who picked Oaks Christian to win, said Tuesday …

No there’s nothing perfect about the selection process for the state football championship games and that’s the problem.
St. Vincent was in the running for the new small schools division game at Carson, but was it really? Two-loss Hamilton Union of Hamilton City near Chico got the nod over once-beaten St. Vincent and undefeated Modoc, most likely on strength of schedule. Or at least strength of schedule determined by …

Newman is going to state. If Newman had lost to Clayton Valley Saturday night it wouldn’t have been a section champion and couldn’t have been considered for the Div. III state bowl game. My question would have been, who have gone. At 12-1, Newman would have still been the best NorCal team with a win over Central Catholic, which in turn beat Sutter, the two schools who stood the best …

From Press Democrat Staff Writer Phil Barber:
One thing you can say about the Cardinal Newman basketball team: They know who butters their bread.
Coach Tom Bonfigli made plenty of substitutions in Saturday’s 62-44 victory over Analy in the final of the Rose City Tournament at Newman’s own John M. Fitzgerald Gymnasium. But his five starters scored 57 of the 62 points.
And the guys who really powered the Cardinals were precisely the …

It is nearly time for the Cardinal Newman/Clayton Valley NCS Division II championship game, which after a closer look at the two teams, would appear to be close game.
If Newman has an advantage it has to be in its high-powered offense. The Cardinals haven’t really had to step it up much in its first two playoff games, but against Clayton Valley it should be a lot like the Palm game, …

How about Newman and St. Vincent going to state? Wow, that would be cool. And for all of you who think I’m a Newman alum, SURPRISE…..My alma mater is St. Vincent.
First things first. It was a difficult week for Newman coach Paul Cronin and his players seemed a little tight early on against Campolindo. Uncharacteristically, Newman had a lot of penalties, a few dropped passes and an early fumble. …

Adding state bowl football championship games two years ago was a good thing overall, despite what basketball coaches might think.
This year the state format included an Open Division Game and a Small School Division game to add to Div. I, Div. II and Div. III games at the Home Depot Center in Carson.
The playoff format and selection is less than flawless — the most difficult part is separating schools into …
