Time didn’t move fast enough for Rancho

by admin

Rancho Cotate lost a heartbreaker to Las Lomas Saturday night on a 59 yard pass to Diante Jackson. It was hard to believe that Las Lomas still had a shot at winning after Rancho held the Knights twice on fourth downs in the final seven minutes. Jackson is an obvious talent, headed to Oregon. Las Lomas did a nice job of isolating Jackson with one-on-one coverage on the TD … Read More »

Cardinal Newman is that good

by admin

It was business as usual for the Cardinal Newman football team, which might not have been quite as sharp as it had been the last few games, but it was the playoffs after all and Newman did have a week off because of a bye. Joe Ferguson getting injured (shoulder, popped back in) isn’t good, but Newman’s depth picked him up nicely. Ferguson is tough and said he’ll do … Read More »

An all Empire Division II championship game?

by admin

Chances of an all Empire North Coast Section Division II championship looks like a distinct possibility with Cardinal Newman in the top half of the bracket and Rancho Cotate and Casa Grande on the bottom half. If Casa can upset Clayton Valley Friday night, the odds would appear better than 50-50 of an all Empire Div. II title game, probably to be played at Santa Rosa High. What do you think?

Ukiah: Total class after gut-wrenching loss

by admin

After his high-school career ended with a punch-in-the-gut 34-33 loss to 12th-seeded Ygnacio Valley on Saturday night, Ukiah quarterback Kyle Morris didn’t want to talk when I approached him for an interview after the game. I can’t say I blame him. Morris was clearly heartbroken. But he also might have figured his brilliant performance spoke for itself. Morris completed 27 of 31 passes for 324 yards and three touchdowns and also ran … Read More »

Big loss for Ukiah

by admin

Fifth-seeded Ukiah won’t have star senior tailback Marcos Hernandez when it meets No. 12 Ygnacio Valley tonight in the first round of the North Coast Section Division II playoffs. Wildcats coach Chris Burris confirmed Friday night that Hernandez suffered a broken arm in last week’s 27-8 win over Elsie Allen. X-rays confirmed the injury this week. Hernandez has rushed for 1,119 yards on 159 carries and scored 10 touchdowns this season. He … Read More »

Gauchos look good in playoff opener

by admin

Casa Grande was very impressive Friday night against Concord. Truthfully, Concord didn’t look any better than a couple of the Empire schools who didn’t make the playoffs, but part of that was Casa’s controling the line of scrimmage. Casa is one of the hottest teams around here. The Gauchos are well-balanced. They have a good runner in Kahil Keys (229 yards on 28 carries last night), a good QB in Matt … Read More »

Fort Windsor: What a team

by admin

From Press Democrat Staff Writer Eric Branch For obvious reasons, we generally don’t delve into junior varsity football at the high school sports blog. However, there are exceptions. And here’s one: Last summer, seven members of the Fort Bragg junior varsity team attended the the University of Oregon Football Camp. Since they didn’t have enough players to field a team ” teams scrimmage against each other during the weeklong camp … Read More »

Tonight’s volleyball match at Maria Carrillo could be great

by admin

From Press Democrat Staff Writer Eric Branch: If past section titles are any barometer, tonight’s girls’ volleyball match between Maria Carrillo and visiting Redwood in the North Coast Section Division II semifinals could be memorable. The two programs have combined for the past three Division II crowns, with Carrillo (28-5) winning in 2007 and 2005. In addition, Redwood (27-10) also won a Division III title in 2003. I covered a Carrillo volleyball … Read More »

North Bay vs. East Bay football

by admin

You get the feeling this isn’t 1987 anymore in the high school football playoffs when our top teams would have to play De La Salle and get worked. I think there’s a couple reasons for improved teams in the North Bay. The new division alignment keeps our best teams away from the Division I East Bay schools and puts them up against schools closer in enrollment. Plus, I think the coaching is … Read More »
