Rancho Cotate lost a heartbreaker to Las Lomas Saturday night on a 59 yard pass to Diante Jackson. Chances of an all Empire North Coast Section Division II championship looks like a distinct possibility with Cardinal Newman in the top half of the bracket and Rancho Cotate and Casa Grande on the bottom half.
If Casa can upset Clayton Valley Friday night, the odds would appear better than 50-50 of an all Empire Div. II title game, probably to be played at Santa Rosa High.

After his high-school career ended with a punch-in-the-gut 34-33 loss to 12th-seeded Ygnacio Valley on Saturday night, Ukiah quarterback Kyle Morris didn’t want to talk when I approached him for an interview after the game.
I can’t say I blame him. Morris was clearly heartbroken. But he also might have figured his brilliant performance spoke for itself.

Fifth-seeded Ukiah won’t have star senior tailback Marcos Hernandez when it meets No. 12 Ygnacio Valley tonight in the first round of the North Coast Section Division II playoffs.
Wildcats coach Chris Burris confirmed Friday night that Hernandez suffered a broken arm in last week’s 27-8 win over Elsie Allen. X-rays confirmed the injury this week.

Casa Grande was very impressive Friday night against Concord. Truthfully, Concord didn’t look any better than a couple of the Empire schools who didn’t make the playoffs, but part of that was Casa’s controling the line of scrimmage.

If past section titles are any barometer, tonight’s girls’ volleyball match between Maria Carrillo and visiting Redwood in the North Coast Section Division II semifinals could be memorable.

You get the feeling this isn’t 1987 anymore in the high school football playoffs when our top teams would have to play De La Salle and get worked.
I think there’s a couple reasons for improved teams in the North Bay. The new division alignment keeps our best teams away from the Division I East Bay schools and puts them up against schools closer in enrollment.
