This is from Press Democrat sportswriter Eric Branch:
I wrote a story for Thursday’s paper about Cardinal Newman running backs Jeff Badger and Joe Ferguson, good friends and star players who have no problem splitting carries and sharing the glory.
Badger’s dad, Lance, is the junior varsity football coach at Cardinal Newman.
Two years ago, he saw how his son and Ferguson had no problems sharing the limelight.
“On the JVs, they’d …

Only one high school football game ” Casa Grande at Windsor ” has been switched from Friday, Halloween night.
The game will be played at Windsor tonight, with the varsity scheduled to start around 7:30. Windsor athletics director Gene Sandwina announced the change over a month ago, saying the Jaguars preferred not to play on Halloween. Casa Grande agreed to the switch.
Both Sonoma County League schools are …

Talking with Rancho Cotate football coach Ed Conroy about his triple option offense he made a good point.
Cardinal Newman also runs a type of triple option offense through QB Randy Wright and its passing game. Wright has many passing options and can check them off at the line of scrimmage as he sees who is single covered or who may likely be open over the middle.
Again, it points out that …

From Press Democrat Assistant Sports Editor Jared Cowley:
Sorry this post is coming in so late tonight (actually, it’s early Sunday morning). I planned to get these up Saturday afternoon, but sometimes best laid plans … well, you know. Anyway, there were some incredible performances from our local athletes this weekend. As always, if we misspell a name or fail to mention a player worthy of attention, let us know. Either …

From Press Democrat Staff Writer Eric Branch, who covered Friday night’s game between Montgomery and Cardinal Newman:
In his 29 seasons at Montgomery, Jason Franci has seen plenty of great teams around the Empire.
And he said after Cardinal Newman’s 42-14 win against Montgomery tonight that he thinks this year’s Cardinals belong in the conversation among the very best.
Newman can add to its reputation when it travels to Rancho Cotate on Halloween …

Ukiah or Ranch Cotate in tonight’s big football game?
I’ve got to go with Rancho. Their defensive line is awfully good and capable of sacking Kyle Morris a lot. The Ukiah line has done a good job, though.
Chances are Rancho is going to run the ball, but knowing it and stopping the option are two different things. Cody Allen (Rancho) is a running threat. He hasn’t thrown all that much, but …

Who’s the best small school football team, St. Vincent, Fort Bragg or Middletown?
With wins over the other two, it’s hard to argue against St. Vincent. Middletown had some costly turnovers against St. Vincent, but good defenses cause those turnovers.
Small school teams have to stay healthy and can get on a roll. That Middletown/Fort Bragg matchup in a couple weeks should be a dandy.

Appropriately, in the next two weekends, three undefeated large school high school football teams will be playing one another, which should also make it easier to rank the three teams.
Here’s an argument for each of Cardinal Newman, Rancho Cotate and Ukiah being ranked No. 1:
Cardinal Newman — Had toughest preseason schedule of the three, is averaging 45 points a game and hasn’t given up a point in three league games. …

From Press Democrat Assistant Sports Editor Jared Cowley:
There are still some games to be played today (Saturday), including an NBL matchup between Maria Carrillo and Piner, but I wanted to credit some of Friday’s top individual performances in Empire football. As always, if we’ve spelled a name wrong, or forgotten a player worthy of mention, let us know by sending an e-mail to sports@pressdemocrat.com or posting a message at the …

No, I didn’t graduate from Cardinal Newman and I’m not on their payroll. They just happen to have a very good football team and I happened to report their 40-0 win over Santa Rosa Friday night.
Why is Newman good? They have standout running backs in Jeff Badger and Joe Ferguson, a mobile and accurate QB in Randy Wright, a fine stable of receivers led by Wade Amaral and Casey Miller …
