A busy Tuesday in high school sports

by admin

There’s a full schedule of high school sports on Tuesday, including boys’ soccer in the NBL, SCL, NCL I North and NCL I South; girls’ soccer in the NCL I North and South; girls’ volleyball in the NBL, SCL, NCL II and other small-school non-league; girls’ golf in the NBL and SCL, and girls’ tennis in the NBL and SCL. Among the boys’ night soccer games are Cardinal Newman … Read More »

Elsie Allen snaps streak and HS football weekend stars

by admin

From Press Democrat Staff Writer Eric Branch: The streak is over. Elsie Allen snapped its 21-game losing streak, a skid that dated back to Sept. 8, 2006, with a come-from-behind 25-12 win at Richmond on Friday night. The uncharitable will point out Richmond’s less-than-stellar tradition. The Oilers have a 2-29 record dating back to 2005, with one of their wins a 15-12 victory over Elsie Allen last year. Still, it’s a start for the … Read More »

Newman-Palma lives up to hype

by admin

Newman/Palma was one of the best high school games I’ve seen recently. Both offenses moved the ball all night and there were plenty of big plays. Jeff Badger is one tough running back. He scored three TDs and had about 10 tackles from his linebacker spot. He also rushed for 130 yards. Palma’s strategy was to take away the passing lanes, which enabled Wright to run free most of the night. … Read More »

Defense rules in Montgomery-Casa clash

by admin

From Press Democrat Staff Writer Eric Branch: Well, after a 0-0 tie, perhaps it’s obviously appropriate to begin by discussing the defenses. With an extra week to prepare after its 13-7 loss to lightly regarded Lincoln, Montgomery looked downright nasty. Casa Grande had entered averaging 36.5 points and 395 yards in its first two games, but the Gauchos only managed 102 yards. Casa did manage 12 first downs, but four were a result … Read More »

FINAL: Cardinal Newman 34, Palma 33

by admin

On the last play of the game, Cardinal Newman quarterback Randy Wright hit Jack James in the back of the end zone with a 13 yard touchdown pass and the Cardinals rallied to down Palma, 34-33, Friday night at Cardinal Newman. Newman led 15-7 at the end of the first quarter and Palma cut the lead to 15-13 early in the second quarter. Palma then drove to the Newman 11 before … Read More »

Free Parking

by admin

I know Friday’s Cardinal Newman/Palma football game is a big deal, but big enough to earn me a reserved parking space? That was the offer on Thursday, a space coned off with my name on it. In my 30 years of covering high school sports in Sonoma County, I can safely say I’ve never been offered my own parking space. Don’t get me wrong. It’s cool and I kinda feel I’ve … Read More »

Ukiah/Petaluma football

by admin

Friday’s game between Ukiah and Petaluma was a good one. Lots of running and an excellent high school quarterback for Ukiah — senior Kyle Morris. Ukiah running back Marcos Hernandez rushed for 160 yards, most of them coming on delay draw plays, that Petaluma finally began anticipating in the second half. Ukiah could have been up two TDs at the half instead of one, but Petaluma’s defense tightened inside the 10 … Read More »

RVC football

by admin

Max preps listed a 6-0 opening week loss for the Rincon Valley Christian football team. Officially, it might be correct, but RVC never took the field. RVC head coach Bob Cazet said that because of a eligibility issue regarding 14 home schooled players on the team, RVC did not play Woodland Christian. Cazet said the NCS has now received the correct paperwork and the RVC team, which plays some NCL II schools … Read More »

Volleyball action heating up

by admin

Usually when teams from different leagues become good, they never play each other, so Thursday’s Maria Carrillo-Analy volleyball match at Sebastopol is huge. Last season they were the top two large school volleyball teams in the Empire and they both figure to be good again this year. Maria Carrillo competes in Division II and Analy in Division III, so there’s no chance they’ll meet in the postseason. Kudos … Read More »

Monty football injury update

by admin

The Vikings suffered a couple of injuries to key players in their opening loss to Grant of Sacramento. The Vikings’ only returning lineman, Jay Luchetti, broke a bone in his leg (non-weight bearing bone) and will be out 4-6 weeks according to coach Jason Franci. Also, quarterback Derek Klomhaus, who threw for over 100 yards in the fourth quarter, has a slight seperation in his throwing shoulder. He’ll probably play against this … Read More »
